World of Horror Review
World of Horror is a bunch of genres mixed together and it's one of the most fun games I've played recently. Basically, it's a horror retro-type RPG point & click action in the art-style of literally anything by Junji Ito. I'm going to mention right now though that I have not read or seen anything by Junji Ito, so I won't be able to say how similar it is to his work, I just know that the art-styles are similar.
The Graphics are absolutely stunning, the 1-bit black and white makes the game feel like if games such as Akalabeth: World of Doom were made today with much more detail in each sprite. Due to the crazy amount of detail going into each and every sprite in the game, I really got terrified by some of the monsters and events in the game such as one event where you see a woman who's gouged her eyes out in fear of seeing one of the old Eldritch Gods haunting the town.
The music in World of Horror is great. It's original, creepy, ominous, and some songs really made me feel stressed. You need to play this game with headphones. My favorite song was definitely Seaside Combat.
The story in World of Horror is this, you're a young person in a small town that's being visited by the old eldritch gods. The actual story of the game isn't what's so great about it, what's so great about World of Horror's story are the mysteries. There are five mysteries to solve each time you start a new game. Those five mysteries are randomly chosen from currently 13. One little detail I loved about the mysteries was the alliteration in their names. Examples would be Alarming Account of Abnormal Arms and Spine-Chilling Story of School Scissors. The stories in the mysteries are all interesting and all have some creepy events. One more thing I like about the mysteries is how there are multiple endings depending on what mystery you're tackling and your decisions.
The gameplay in World of Horror is fantastic. Exploring the town trying to figure out mysteries is incredibly fun. The battle system is really fun. You have a limited amount of to pull off actions, so choose wisely. You can fight with weapons or fists, use an item, magic, or other things like running away. There are lots of decisions you'll need to make which can change the gameplay. An example would be that when you get EXP, you have two choices for what to do with it. Level up and unlock new skills, or give the EXP as information to the police in exchange for cash. There are three ways to get a game over, dying due to loss of health, Losing all your reason (sanity), and the doom meter becoming full. The doom meter is basically a timer which can get filled by running away from fights, buying items, or choosing certain options during events. Finally, the game is short, only about an hour long, but it is highly replayable.
World of Horror is one of my favorite games that I've played this year, is one of my favorite indie games, and is absolutely one of my favorite games. So, surprise, surprise, I think it's a 10/10. Anyone who enjoys the RPG or horror genres need to play World of Horror. Play it. It's fifteen dollars. Here's the link.
